The one item that you cannot live without is water, therefore; you need to make sure you have an adequate supply of water with you so that if you were stranded for a few days, you would have water.

Obviously, you cannot carry gallons of water with you when you are hiking. Therefore, it is vital to have water purifying tablets with you, that way when you locate water, you can drop a tablet in the water, and it will take out the impurities so that you can safely drink it. Essential disaster survival kits need to include some basic necessities such as water, but you need other tools to help you survive if you are exposed to the elements. First, you need to have a first aid kit that includes items such as bandages and gauze in case you or someone you are with is injured. Secondly, you need to have a survival knife as this can be used to cut wood, build a shelter, and even prepare food. It is an item that those that have been stranded wished they had.

Make sure you bring along lighters and matches because if you are in the desert where it is cold in the evenings, you will have a way to build a fire to stay warm. Furthermore, you need to have survival flares, so that you have the ability to shoot these off so that others can find you if you are lost. In your disaster survival kits, you should have an extraordinarily powerful flashlight because this can help you to see at night, and can also help someone find you if the light is bright enough. Lastly, make sure your disaster survival kits have plenty of food, such as the freeze-dried variety, a compass, and a reflective blanket that can be placed on the ground near where you are that reflects the sun and can help rescuers find you easier. By having the proper items in your survival kits, if you are ever lost in the wilderness, you will have a much better chance of surviving the ordeal.
